Joint Deployment and Power Control Optimization Scheme for UAV-assisted IoT Networks

Abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assists internet of things (IoT) devices in uploading data is a promising technology in the next generation communication system, while a large number of IoT devices can generate a huge upstream data flow, and widely deployed IoT devices may be far from base station (BS). In this work, we consider an uplink transmission from IoT devices to BS. Throughout the entire communication process, the UAV needs to cover all target IoT devices and continuously connect with them. To this end, we have investigated an optimization problem for joint UAV deployment and power control, covering all IoT devices, reducing the number of UAV investments, and decreasing the power consumption of UAV networks. Considering the complexity of the problem, we categorize UAVs into access UAVs (AUAVs) and relay UAVs (RUAVs), and divide the optimization problem into two sub-problems, namely AUAV deployment optimization problem (ADOP) and RUAV deployment optimization problem (RDOP), respectively. Then, we present an edge shuttle deployment algorithm with user equipment concentration algorithm (ESD-UEC) for solving the ADOP, and then introduce a firefly algorithm based UAV deployment (FAUD) algorithm to deal with RDOP. Compared to existing methods, it reduces required UAVs by 5%-11% while achieving 28%-81% lower power consumption in UAV relay networks, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.
